Just as this darter was about to land, it dragged one of its wings on the surface of the lake startling a few fishes in the process, some of them jumped out of the water.

After watching this beautiful sight we came to know that the pelican is carrying a piece of a fishing net which it was able to break through. a few month ago other birds were not so lucky and here was proof that nothing was being done to stop illegal fishing.

Gone are the days when the sky would be filled with these beautiful scavengers circling gracefully.
watching them glide so effortlessly, we humans might have got the inspiration to create Gliders.
What are we talking about?
VULTURES of course.

A single drug "Diclofenac" has been linked to the conspicuous disappearance of many of the vulture species in India, along with the fact that they lay only one egg.
Most of them are either "Endangered" or "Critically Endangered" as per The IUCN Redlist.
They have served mankind by taking care of carrion so efficiently that we didnot even notice it.
What a Reward we have given them for their service.
(what happens to vultures also happens to us, when we take the drug for extended periods.)

Can't we Ban a single Drug from veterinary use, knowing that it has been "proven" deadly for all the vulture species?

Can't we stop Building a Rope-way in a place where pilgrims have walked on foot for time immemorial, and insist on doing so even now?

With all the money earned in the bargain will we be able to create another planet to escape to when Earth becomes Inhospitable to live in?

Even if we do will we be able to manage it any better than we are doing so right now?

Its time to realise that conservation of our Forests and wildlife is not only important for the future of the Vulture, Or the Tiger (pride of India) Or the Lion (pride of Gujarat), but for the future of Humans on the planet.

If the policy makers and industrialists think that they can earn their billions and than spend it to secure the future for their Future Generations, That would be the stupidest (i.e. The most intelligent) Idea that man would ever have had.

Can we take pride in what we have done to the planet?
Its anybody's guess.

have evolved to evade their predators by blending into their surroundings.
The color of Eggs and chicks also help them to blend into their surroundings
in order to win the race of survival in the wild.
Cryptic coloration is the most common form of camouflage.
At times colorful birds can also become invisible in the right environment.

Most waders have different lengths of beaks, so that even when they all feed together each species feeds at different depths. most waders have nostrils at the base of the beak and the tip of the beak is extra sensitive, to feel the prey underground.
The kiwi bird is unique in that it has nostrils at the tip of the beak, making it extremely sensitive to smell.

The little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), also known as the Dabchick,
is the smallest member of the grebe family.

All grebes are accomplished divers and to assist them in swimming under water

the bird’s lobed feet are placed well back at the rear of their bodies.

In fact, a grebe cannot move well on land and rarely comes ashore,

mostly to breed.

On our last trip to the Little rann of kutch,
we had missed the opportunity to see
this beautiful raptor, as our car had got stuck
in the wet desert mud.
This time we kept our distance from the lake
to avoid getting stuck.
This time we got lucky. Raptors (like most birds)
spend a considerable time preening their feathers,
we spent almost 90 minutes watching the Peregrine Falcon
scratching and preening its feathers, before taking off.

We have photographed the Hanuman langur before,

But never seemed to like any of the shots.

On this particular day the light was softened by the clouds

and the juveniles were in a playful mood.

The only problem was the low light and

to add to that the playful mood of the juveniles,

who were always on the move.

Shooting lots of frames was the only way to get a few usable frames.
It is one of our all time favorites, as we feel that it captures
the playful character of the Langurs

Had the good fortune to watch the only member of the family Pandionidae (an osprey) with fish fly over our head and land in front of us,and eating it. After a while it was mobbed by a crow and as it took off it was than mobbed by a stilt and than a kite.
It didn't loose its meal to the kite, and was seen feeding on the fish a mile or so from the original feeding perch.

While flying with a fish it keeps the head of the fish forward,
To reduce drag and thereby reducing the effort required to fly.

The Osprey and Owls are the only raptors whose outer toe is reversible,
allowing them to grasp their prey with two toes in front and two behind.
This is particularly helpful when they grab and carry slippery fish.

To reduce its weight it usually removes the waste products before taking flight.

Fruits and edible-oil seeds cannot be formed without "HELP" from these critters.

Pollination services provided by insects, mainly bees, are worth EUR 153 billion a year, according to new EU-funded research. This figure is equivalent to almost a tenth of the total value of world agricultural food production. Scientists warn that without these pollination services, the supply of fruits, vegetables and stimulants such as coffee and cocoa would no longer meet the current demand.

Crows often mob Raptors and other threats to their nests. here they were attacking a small group of critically endangered white backed vultures.
loved the embarrassed look on the face of the vulture. While the crows are quite adaptable the white backed vulture populations are declining rapidly. These Vultures have suffered a 99 percent population decrease in India and nearby countries since the
early 1990s. The decline has been widely attributed to poisoning by diclofenac, which is used as veterinary non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID),
leaving traces in cattle carcasses which when fed on leads to kidney failure in birds.

The Desert in Summer - LRK Trip Report

"Desert" - The word conjures up an unmistakable image of an inhospitable place devoid of life, with sand dunes stretching out as far as the eyes can see. We could see that image of the "Desert" evaporate in front of our eyes when we visited The Rann of Kutch (Little & Greater) last year. It evolved into something exponentially resplendent, as we revisited the little rann of kutch repeatedly after that.

The best time to visit the wild ass sanctuary is from november to February as the biodiversity is at its peak during this time, the terrain is motor-able and the heat is bearable.

We thought it would be interesting to notice the changes in density and variety of wildlife in march and to experience the desert during the summer months.
We left Ahmedabad at 4a.m. (getting up that early is the toughest part) taking the route through sanand-viramgam-malvan and took a sharp right (almost U) turn from malvan to bajana, where we picked up our guide and got the permit to enter the wild ass sanctuary.

We felt at ease on reaching there as the horrifying traffic of the highway had vanished, giving way to trails, bushes and open desert. It was almost 6:45 a.m. when we reached there, thanks to a closed railway crossing that had to be opened after the train that was expected to cross, trickeled to a halt, just a few yards from the crossing. we drove a few miles to reach an oasis that was a haven for wildlife, we spotted pelicans (not spotted but rosy pelicans), flamingos, spoonbills, grey herons, a few ducks and waders.By now the water had reduced to a fraction of its size when we visited in winter, and the density and variety of birds had decreased dramatically.

The sandy bumpy trail on which we were rocking gradually turned into a firm bone rattling one. As we took a turn we realized that we were in the middle of a mine field of sand grouses that took off around us as we drove through.

Chestnut Bellied sand grouse rely on their camouflage to elude hunters.

Just off the trail we spotted a group of Nilgai being harassed by a small group of stray dogs. Judging from the health of the dogs we could conclude why its wild cousins - the foxes, wolves, hyenas and jackals call this place home,but they were nowhere to be seen as we rattled along, checking out areas of frequent sightings, at times creating a dust storm of our own behind the vehicle.
The Peregrine Falcon is another beautiful raptor that can be found here, and it made a guest appearance, flying past us just as we were talking about it. It had fattened up considerably, which reminded us to have our fill.

The fastest bird in flight can reach speeds upto 320 km/h
while stooping on its prey from above.

we had our lunch at the watch-tower and drove a few miles to stumble upon a small group of blackbucks, on stopping the vehicle we realized that we had paid the price for not driving carefully, no the traffic police was not following us but one of our tyres was punctured and changing it under the desert sun was an unforgettable experience.

Its a struggle for survival for the people and wildlife of the desert.
The endangered wildlife could face devastating consequences in case of a drought.

We headed straight for Patdi a few miles that seemed like light years in the desert terrain. We took a more civilized tar road back to Bajana, where we rested out the afternoon under a tree, in company of a few locals who chatted away endlessly, while a variety of common birds visited the 'Parab' (a small water tank) nearby.

As the mercury dropped to a more tolerable level in the evening we ventured deep into the desert, hoping to get a glimpse of the extremely shy Desert fox. Trucks could be seen carrying salt from the salt mines while people worked endlessly on salt production. Watching all this we could not help but think how one greedy species could claim every bit of land on the planet as its property.

As the sun started to sink towards the horizon we came across a lonely stallion grazing, unfazed by the storm of dust that passed over it. As the dust disappeared we could see that something had appeared behind the Gudkhar (wild ass in local language) a close look through the viewfinder revealed that it was the desert fox. Driving between the two we could get close to the fox that was quite wary. It was a breathtaking sight to witness this beautiful creature from close quarters as the last rays of sun kissed its fur giving it a surreal appearance.

The Desert Fox is only found in the Thar desert in Rajasthan and Kutch, Gujarat.
It has keen sense of smell and hearing, which it relies on to find its prey.

We returned back with unforgettable memories. A crane (not the bird) and heaps of salt reminded us once again of how we exploit nature but forget that we depend on it as well.

If we continue to inflict damage to these last pockets (not just this sanctuary) of natural splendor, the holes that we create in these pockets could unknowingly allow the little natural wealth that is left to trickle down until one day when we realize that there is none of it left for us.

was a beautiful evening when it was virtually impossible to seperate the horizon from the sky the low tide had begun and i was trying to stalk a grey heron to get it with its reflection, while shooting it i heard a diffrent kind of call which i had never heard before, an adult crab plover and a juvenile were flying by, i had the Nikon D40 with the Sigma 170-500 dg lens on it, (Darn!!! - the autofocus would not work as the D40 doesnot have a motor and same goes with the sigma 170-500) somehow luck was on my side and i managed to focus on these beautiful birds as they came close.

As we reached khijadiya we could hear
the cranes calling nearby but could not see them,
the blessing in disguise was that we got to experience
the beauty of a misty morning at the beautiful lake
as the light reached us after being filtered through the mist.
It was one of the most memorable mornings of our lives.
Thanks to the sigma 50-500mm lens we could shoot the
landscape without changing the lens,
knowing that if a bird came flying by, all that was needed
to capture it was the twist of the zoom ring.

The light was really low when the lion got up
and start patrolling its territory.
could not get a sharp shot at 500mm setting
of the 50-500mm lens when it was sitting.
As we were in a car, we used a beanbag and zoomed out
to 195 mm to reduce the blur, panned the camera while squeezing
the shutter on continuous shooting mode
to increase the chance of getting a sharp frame.
1/13 sec at f8 the camera was on 800 ISO.

Had to sit patiently for an hour near this pond
before the birds started fishing.
The efficiency of this particular Night Heron was amazing,
at times it would catch two fishes in one go,
after about 15-20 minutes I lost count of the fishes it had gulped down.
A paddy bird would try its luck at fishing at the same spot
but would be driven away by its bigger competitor,
even then it managed to get its share from
under the nose (beak) of the night heron.
It was eventually disturbed by a herdsmen
who brought his cattle to the pond for a bath,
and that was the end of the show!!

Taken on our trip to the Greater Rann of Kutch
this was our first sighting of the species
in the Banni Grasslands.
It was one of the most memorable moments of the trip.
taken from inside the car a beanbag was used for supporting the lens
as the light was low.

A lot of dragonflies were flying around at this particular
spot. This image was shot keeping the camera on manual
exposure mode while pre-focusing the lens at its minimum
focusing distance and keeping a small aperture to
maximize the depth of field, waiting for it to fly
in that zone against the orange sky.

The sun had disappeared and we didn’t have a single lion
sighting on that particular safari, while returning we
suddenly stumbled upon a lioness with two juveniles
hardly 10-15 meters from our jeep. Using the homemade
beanbag on the side of the jeep and resting the lens on it
helped to get a shake free image, everybody in the vehicle
co-operated when they were asked to freeze before
shooting a few frames using the motor drive.

This male was lying near the waterhole rolling on this rock scratching the parts of its body which were hard to reach otherwise. as the light was very low, the camera was supported on a beanbag, every body in the jeep co-operated when asked to freeze.

These little waders are very difficult to get close.
I had to slowly crawl on my elbows like a soldier to get
a reasonable size image of this stint in beautiful plumage,
the bottom part of the image looks green because of the low angle
and the grass in the foreground near the lens

This was made on our 2nd trip to the Velavadar national park
in two years, as we reached there the sun was just rising
and the blackbuck were feeding,
liked the rimlighting on the antelope hence focused on the backlit
instead of the frontlit one that was on the other side of our car.
suddenly one of the females started to run and leap out of the grass.
luckily we were there on time to photograph it.
this was the only shot sharp enough to keep as the light was low.

These godwits were preventing each other from intruding their patch near a lake, both of them were continuously feeding but both of thought that the grass was greener on the other side and tried invading each others patch, at times hitting each other with their beaks. while the poor photographer was sitting in the muck with his shoes stuck in and his trousers dirty - giving joy to all who passed by. on one instance one of the godwits got a really nasty hit and fell down but got up and started fighting again till both of them flew away.

to compensate for the low light level

This shot of a Flying Fox (Fruit Bat) was especially difficult to take.
framing it in total darkness was just one of the challenges ,
the other was focusing and getting the exposure right.
i prefocused at a certain distance and waited for it to come near,
the rest was upto pure luck.

One of our favourite shots photographed at dusk near our home,
we soon learned that there is no need to go to exotic places
to take good photographs also no need for expensive equipment,
this photograph was shot with a 70-300mm zoom lens
(costing INR 5K i.e. ~ 125 $)
